Why is this Monday different from all others?

It’s an interesting day here in South Florida.

First, I am working from my home office. Usually, I don’t work from home, though in the past I did for years.

Second, I am sitting outside by the pool , overlooking the lake, and working.

I never, ever work outside. Usually so hot and humid where I live that being outside is not a pleasant thing. And those of you who know me personally know I am not exactly what you would call an “outdoors person.”

But once a year, usually in the third week of October, something strange and incredible happens overnight: A cold front comes in and brings our temperature down to about 65-70 with low humidity.

This may sound weird, but this is the most glorious time of the year for us here in South Florida. We LIVE for our winter-time! And now it is here and I have chosen to take advantage of it and work outside.

Why am I home, in the first place, today? Well, my kids have a day off from school. One of many. Many.

I don’t know about where you live, but where I am (Palm Beach County, Florida — same place that managed to screw up the 2000 presidential election with confusing ballots) the public schools have A LOT of 1/2 days (one per month), a bunch of teacher development days and of course the usual holidays.

All of this makes for a lot of time off.

Teachers work hard, that’s for sure. And I am very grateful for an amazing public school system where I live. But I don’t remember having all this time off when I was growing up. It sure seems like a lot, especially for a family like mine in which both parents work outside of the house full time.

But instead of complaining I am going to enjoy this day. (I will enjoy this day. I will enjoy this day. I will enjoy this day….) I will work as usual, but in a different setting (outside, at home) and with 3-6 kids running in and out of the house at any given moment.

Serenity now…..
