Father’s Day vs. Mother’s Day

simon-with-kids-fathers-day1

I’m never quite sure what to do about Father’s Day. Is it a time when daddy-o is supposed to spend the whole day bonding with his kid crew, or is it a day he should get a break from them?

After pondering the question for about five seconds, I decided to go with the bonding. Fact is, he spends a lot of time at work so doesn’t exactly need a ‘break’ from the kids. As such, I lined up a few dad and kid activities for the morning.

Breakfast in bed was not on the agenda, so the first activity was to send him off to his favourite greasy spoon with the three biggies followed by a trip to the golf store where he cashed in a gift certificate that was two-years-old. The rest of the day mostly involved daddy-o swimming in the backyard pool with the gang. Father’s Day is now wrapped up for another year.

Meatloaf and Mood Swings

The only way in which I even remotely resemble Martha Stewart is weekday meal planning - no, I’m not smoking my own lox or carving radish roses, but I’ve learned to prep dinners in the morning, so on hectic days of driving kids to activities until dinnertime, I have something ready to heat up.

This is less a display of organization than a bribe to myself (if I get through the hellish afternoon, I’ll actually have a dinner I enjoy instead of stale leftovers or take-out I can’t afford).

This morning was fairly typical - during the time it took me to assemble one meatloaf, I went through a day’s worth of perimenopausal mood changes.

I’m anal and I admit it!

I don’t wholly think of myself as a person who needs to be in control all of the time, but I suppose, if I’m being brutally honest, an apt description would go something like this, ’she’s alot of fun, a great friend…and she likes to be in control most of the time.’  There, I said it.

So imagine the goosebumps when I spied a new handy-dandy, even-a-goofball-could-use-it labeler.

Thank you Brother!  And I don’t mean that in a religious or familial way.  I recently discovered the P-Touch 1280 Home & Office Labeler by Brother.  While I can’t say that it has eliminated all the chaos and stress from my life, it certainly has made it easier to keep track of all of our stuff…and my family has a lot of stuff!  My husband is a hoarder of mass proportions.  I love him dearly, but c’mon.
My happy new ‘toy’ (so much for excitement over a new sex toy, right?), has great features:
  • No rocket science degree needed to operate it.  Need I say more?

Don’t Mess With the Mamas

Can anyone ever forget that creepy feeling they got when watching Rebecca De Mornay’s nanny character breastfeeding the baby in The Hand That Rocks the Cradle?
Well, kinda creepy.
Those of us with chronic milk supply issues have been known to scream out “where’s that crazy breast-feeding nanny when you need her?” as we scan the want ads for a wet nurse.
That movie title comes from an expression that long acknowledges that mamas are powerful. Shaping the next generation is a big job but our power does not stop there.
A recent article in the New York Times quotes a study confirming what we have long known at Mabel’s Labels - that mamas can make or break your business. More than ever, women are making the buying decisions for families and looking to each other (and not advertising) for information on products.
Mama customers are a force to be reckoned with and you had better serve up top quality product and customer service. If you don’t, a mama can take you down with one blog post and no amount of advertising will dig you out of that hole.

Mamas have solid social networks and a strong online presence where we are willing to share our opinions about everything from what stroller we like best to how many cup sizes we’ve dropped since finishing breastfeeding.

I’m partial to stay-at-home moms

I spent about 30 minutes on the phone yesterday with potential client.

I asked him detailed questions about his business, his projections and his websites. We discussed web traffic, lead generation, marketing and other areas related to where my services could aid in his business growth.

As we wrapped up the conversation, I let him know I would be putting together my recommendations and pricing in a proposal and would send within the next few days.

As we were about to hang up, he informed me he is a dad and told me about his children (gender, ages, etc.). I shared the same info about my own kids and we had about 2-3 minutes of that type of personal conversation (after a phone call that had been “all business”).

We were really at the end of the discussion when he told me something that stopped me in my tracks: ”I am partial to stay-at-home moms, so I really hope we can work together.”
