Blink. Is it over already?
After spending the past year on maternity leave with baby #2, I’m heading back to the corporate world tomorrow and shedding the mommy uniform (at least between the hours of 9 and 5). To be honest, I haven’t let myself think too much about the fact that I’m going back to the working mom role. Up until this past week I was operating business as usual, my days were filled with taking care of my baby girl, shuttling my Autistic son, Max, to therapy, doctor’s appointments, and assessments, and trying to keep our household running as smoothly as possible. So, as usual, the dishes were overflowing from the sink, we were all out of clean socks and underwear, and emergency calls were being placed to my husband for him to pick up milk on the way home.

Me at the beginning of my 1st week back at work.
I survived my first week back at work. I’m not going to lie, the mornings came early, the days were long, and most nights I fell into bed not long after my kids. But I made it, and I learned some important lessons along the way.
Ten Things I Learned My First Week Back At Work:
1. Coffee tastes better when you don’t have someone pulling on your pantleg. So does lunch.
2. A 5:30am wakeup call always feels like the middle of the night, no matter how early you go to bed.

This morning a friend sent me one of those you’ve-got-to-be-kidding-me emails. Before I tell you about it, let me set the stage a bit.
Those who know me well, know that I’m no Suzy Homemaker…by any stretch of the imagination. I certainly know my way around a kitchen and consider myself adept at putting meals together, but putting meals together doesn’t actually have to mean rolling up your sleeves and getting slimy surf or turf parts on your hands! Truthfully, that part kind of grosses me out.
Veggies and dessert, which to me are the book-ends of a meal, now those I’ve got covered. I happily chop, dice, slice and saute veggies. Cut-up fruit is a staple too. I’m a whiz at adding high calorie add-ins to slice n bake cookies. Writing and playing with frosting? Love to. See what I mean? No Suzy Homemaker. Julia Child and Rachel Ray would shake their heads at my unabashed lack of desire to cook.

Our eight year old daughter was giving a presentation in her classroom today, and asked my husband and I to come. Now, I liked elementary school as much as the next little wide-eyed and bushy-tailed girl when I was a kid, but when I walk through the hallway now, there isn’t one little bit of me that wishes I could go back…
So the deal was, each child was to pick a passion of theirs, write a report and also create some kind of visual to go along with it, and then share it with the class. Ok, easy enough. Thankfully our little one is pretty darn self-motivated and takes on any challenge w/o any real coercing. According to her teacher, the idea of this “Personal Project” was that all the kids could learn something they didn’t know about their classmates. Cool. I get that.

In today’s world every woman and mom think she’s a therapist.
We diagnose our friends and family labeling everyone we meet:
“She’s Psychotic!”
“He’s a Sociopath!”
“She just went Schizo on me!”
“He’s such a Narcissist!”
“You need Prozac!”
It used to be “She’s Crazy!” or “What a Lunatic!” These derogatory terms, while offensive, were non-specific and less harmful. Today, we are all more aware of mental health and have adopted much of the jargon associated with it.
We use it trying to understand the people around us and we also use it to hurt them as well. Whether with positive or negative intentions, we often misuse these critical diagnostic terms.
As a professional in the field, I want to reach out to those of you who have the desire to be “Clinically Correct.” We all know that knowledge is power and I’d like to educate those of you who want to be empowered.

So, if you go to our Marketplace on the WorkingMomLifeline.com website, you’ll see a bunch of items/products designed and created by yours truly.
I have fun doing this, and it satisfies my creative side (hopefully it also helps my parents feel good about the fact that they paid alot to send me to a pricey art school for four years, albeit a prestigious one, but nonetheless, it cost them plenty). We have all kinds of items in our “store”, but one in particular has apparently caused a problem.
Mastercard thinks I’m infringing - on what, I have no idea; could be circles, the color yellow, or that I used an equal (=) sign. Call me crazy, but in the most simple terms, that’s about it.
The offending item is a onesie, for a baby (go figure). I came up with the idea, it made me laugh and I quickly designed it and posted it in our store. Seemed benign enough to me, I guess not so much…
