Brain on Hiatus

I’m the primary shopper for groceries in our family, and as such, you would think it wouldn’t be that difficult to keep track of what we need/what I buy, right?  I’m here to prove, ‘not so much’.

I make lists (for everything), I’m a list-maker.  Lists make me feel like I have things under control.  Apparently, the part of my brain that goes with me when I go to Publix (FL. chain), didn’t get that memo.  For some bizarre, unknown-to-me reason, there are a couple of items that I always seem to add to my list: frozen whole grain pancakes and/or waffles, play the chief offender.

Yesterday, I made a “quick Publix run”, which is akin to a quick trip to Target (damn near impossible!).  I stick to my list, as usual, only deviating by one or two items (bonus points for me?).

On my list are frozen pancakes…surprise, surprise! Being a good list-abider, I buy two packages, partly because our son recently got braces and is still in soft food mode.  I reason that at least he can eat mushy pancakes, so he won’t starve.  Our daughter occassionally eats a waffle or pancake or two, but it’s not like they’re a big part of her daily food consumption.  My husband and I never eat them…and we don’t feed anything but dog food (much to her chagrin) to our dog, so it’s not like we go through a lot of them.

I return home from my trip to Publix, open the freezer and this is what I see - four boxes of pancakes, two boxes of waffles and two boxes of mini muffin tops! Holy frozen carb overload!!!  I shake my head and laugh out loud at myself, and then I go out to our second freezer in the garage, figuring I’ll shove them in there.  Look at the photo below…exactly where should I put the new frozen purchase?

Frozen Overload!

Frozen Overload!

So, if you read this before next week-end, come on over and join us for brunch…there will be pancakes (hey, I can make them somewhat homemade feeling - we can throw on some chocolate chips or fruit slices) on the menu…lots and lots of pancakes.

At least I don’t have a cabinet full of syrup.

  1. OMG Deb, I do the same thing.

My pancake/waffle equivalent is white bread. Plain old white bread that I wouldn’t eat ever (it might kill me, right?) and my kids eat in their lunch but never any place or time at home or beyond that. I may have about 4-5 loaves at any given time.

Plus, as you know, living in FL, white bread is a total hurricane staple that no one ever actually eats pre-, during or post-hurricane but that we all MUST have.

  2. LOL! I know exactly what you mean! Now, in my house, the frozen pancakes and waffles simply fly out the door since that’s what 3 out of our 4 family members typically eat for breakfast.

I tend to have this problem with gallons fo milk. As much as I hate to admit it, my children aren’t drinking as much milk these days as they used to be. (which begs the question “what are they drinking?”, seeing as how I don’t buy juice on a regular basis.) We keep all of our extra milk in the fridge in the garage. So, its not staring me in the face everyday and I almost always forget to check the fridge before running to the store. As a general rule, I just buy a gallon or 2 every couple of weeks. Last week, I went to put my gallon in there, only to find 2 more already there…one of which was already expired! oops!

  3. The waffle scenario is like mac and cheese at my house. Rule of the house,if you are in a grocery store, buy it. It doesn’t matter how much is already at home since our kids eat almost nothing else. (And throw a tantrum when it is not readily available.) I hate to admit it, but I have actually let them eat it for breakfast, lunch and dinner all in the same day. My mother would be horrified! (Its organic so I figure it must be ok! LOL!)

  4. Organic mac n’ cheese? Something I’ve never tried, but it sounds promising.

Next time I stock up on pancakes and waffles (even though I have enough to feed my entire neighborhood at this moment), I’ll toss in a handful of organic noodles too!

I’m a big fan of weird (or as I like to spin it…”silly”) meals - you want breakfast for dinner or dinner for breakfast? All good in this household.

Pizza is the workhorse, that one crossover food…works like a charm 24 hours a day! It’s breakfast if you serve it with a side of canteloupe, lunch with a side salad, and dinner if you add in some mixed veggies.

In my world, that counts as a balanced nutritious meal!
