Are They Ever Safe?

A few nights ago, we had a little incident that I can’t stop thinking about. Quite frankly, I’m still feeling a bit sick about it.

I put the kids to bed. My three little ladies sleep “Little House on the Prairie” style all in one room. With two single beds, a toddler bed and the dressers taking up residency in the hallway, it works well. On this particular night, Little Lady #1 was at the ballet with Nan and Little Lady #2 fell asleep as soon as her head hit the pillow.

Like most good mom entrepreneurs, after kids are in bed I make the most of the next few quiet hours. I was working away on my computer and at about 8:00pm I heard Little Lady #3 (who is three-years-old) making some little whimpering sounds. Like most noises originating from a kid’s bedroom, I ignored it for a while. I finally sent daddy-o up to check out the situation and shut her down. A moment later he called me out of my office to have a look at her.

The Homely?

Yesterday, I asked my eight year old daughter to go through her bathing suits from last summer, and see which ones still fit and which ones don’t.  We had just purchased a handful of new ones for this (yes, I’m a tad early, but we live in FL., so it’s more than just being super-anal) summer, and I knew she had them all stuffed into this one tiny drawer.

Eventually, she comes downstairs with four suits and one rashguard top, that had been a favorite…and was worn over and over again.  Here is where our “who’s on first?” exchange started to blossom.

Refrigerators and invisibility

Like most of us, I am sure your refrigerator is the family bulletin board.  Like most bulletin boards I am sure it has its share of current and outdated drawings, business magnets and notes.  Our refrigerator is the same.

This is a world-wide phenomenon. I have been fortunate to be in many homes around the world and only rarely I have I seen a refrigerator or some other appliance without photos, drawings and important notes.

No matter how important the note or the photo we soon stop seeing the things we put on the fridge as if they have become invisible. They don’t really disappear; we just stop seeing them because they are so familiar. It takes special effort to keep paying attention to the things on the refrigerator so they don’t become invisible to us.
