It’s true — no one likes it when you brag about how easy it was to pull together a seven-course meal for 40, wearing heels and a darling outfit, all without breaking a sweat. Or staining your outfit.
This is a Universal Girlfriend Truth, and you must abide (but only if you want to have girlfriends, I guess). I had a long-ago friend who clearly hadn’t been clued in on that one, and I think nearly everyone agreed that she was just plain annoying.
But I would venture that it’s not just the loss of the friends you will alienate with your cockiness. You’re also likely to receive a king-sized smack in the head from the Universe.

It’s the weekend and my 13-month-old son is teething.
He woke up twice last night angry and then even more cranky mood early this morning. He’s tired, hurt and frustrated. I’m tired, hurt and frustrated. My husband—who is a great dad, husband and man—was able to sleep through it all.
Now my husband, after having experienced a lovely sleep-in, is cozying up to me, acting sweet, loving, and helpful. I call this Santa Clause syndrome—he is on his best behavior so he can get a little something. You see, on weekends, we make great efforts to get some loving time in.
I suppose somewhere deep down beneath all the tiredness I wouldn’t mind a little romp. Connection time and a much needed boost of oxytocin and endorphins would really help. However, any desire that I can muster is currently being squashed by, “If you wanted to have sex today, then you should have helped with the baby last night” ruminations.

I don’t know what it is about me and the word “yes.”
Somebody asks me to do something and rather than say, “You know, I’m a bit busy this month,” I smile and say, “Yes, of course, I can do it, no problem at all.”
Sure. No problem if I didn’t have two businesses, a husband and two kids. With birthday parties to attend. And little league games to play. And ice skating recitals to perform in. Did I mention gymnastics, astronomy, cooking and tennis? Oh, and that dentist appointment I have to keep putting off because we don’t have time to get there since my daughter may miss a tennis lesson that I inadvertently scheduled before consulting with my mental calendar?
Yes, I have a mental calendar. I do not write things down in a datebook, or in my Outlook express calendar or my BlackBerry for that matter. I keep all the dates right in my head.

We’re thrilled to welcome a new Resident Genius to our Get Your Genius section.
Leslie Reichert is all about making cleaning efficient, work for you and, yes, a little bit fun. Check her and all of our Geniuses out on the WorkingMomLifeline.com site.
(BTW, we “strongly dislike” cleaning as much as the next working mom — but someday, some way we all have to do it, right? So why not make it work for you and your family while finding the fun in it?)

When the ‘Ho ho ho’ turns in to ‘go go go’ and you feel like wearing your black Halloween costume to the office holiday party, it may be time to take a step back and put some joy back into the season.
Here are a few tips to help you stay up-beat and in the mood:
- Make your own merry: Don’t wait for anyone else to make this a great holiday. Make a great holiday being a holiday hero:
- At the drive thru: Pay for the person behind you at the drive through or standing in line for coffee. You will definitely make someone’s day.
- Do something unexpected: There is nothing like having someone do something nice that is unexpected. Do that for someone today and help make their holiday happier and you will feel happier as well.
